Well, a student certainly could become a ghost (i.e, Moaning Myrtle). You also have to take into account the fact that only those who do not die happy become ghosts (Which constantly makes me wonder what happened to Quirrell.) 

If Harry did die and became a ghost, maybe he'd take up Myrtle's offer to share her bathroom ^_~
