Me:
Except, Riddle is related to Slytherin through his *mother's* side, 
not his fathers.  Tom Riddle senior was a Muggle and his name would 
not be in "Hogwart's, A History".  Not even Riddle himself is 
mentioned in that book, as Dumbledore says that very people knew 
that Voldemort attended Hogwarts under his original name of Tom 
Riddle.  
I expect that Riddle heard about the Chamber of Secrets and went 
looking for it.  He knew he could speak Parseltongue and guessed 
and/or researched that he would have what it took to open the 
Chamber.  Just my ideas, anyway.
