At the end of *Sorcerer's Stone*, Dumbledore tells Harry that his father 
left it with Dumbledore to pass on to him.  (He never says when or why this 
happened. I would guess it was before James and Lily went into serious 
hiding from Voldemort, but I can't figure out a good reason why you wouldn't 
take an invisibility cloak with you if you wanted to be hard to find ...)
