This is not a typical shipper question insofar as it doesn't address the appropriateness of one character becoming involved with another. Rather, it addresses the relationship of the author to her characters.

Jo Rowling has said that Hermione is a character loosely based on herself. As such, it is interesting that she has Hermione becoming attracted to Ron rather than Harry. It's significant since frequently the central male character of any story is also the designated "alpha male" of the characters, the one for whom love comes soonest.
