I'm re-reading GoF myself at the moment and after perusing this 
thread it strikes me to note, "Sometimes a pipe is just a pipe." I 
would rather believe that it is just a convenient plot devise to get 
the story moving (creepy old house with a nasty past, etc.) and 
Dumbledore's reading the local fishwrapper just more evidence of his 
vast intelligence.

Just my opinion.
