   I don't think any of us think Snape is 'nice'. In fact IMO that's 
the whole point of the character; to show a person can be quite nasty 
and unpleasant yet when the chips are down on the side of the angels. 
Of course we've now found out that James and Sirius weren't quite 
nice themselves once upon a time and they are definitely counted 
among the good guys.
