Well, I'm back to write down my theory about Albus Percival Wulfric
Brian Dumbledore sorrow, his weakness moments with Harry in OoP, and
his worries about the prophecy.
Let's go:
I always kept a look on Dumbledore. Of course I don't believe he is
evil. I can see how noble his ideas and acts are to all WW. He had
managed Hogwarts from 1970 (according to HP-Lexicon site). Before, he
taught Transformations at least between 1942 (CoS) and 1956 (in OoP
McGonagall says she has teaching Transformations for "39 years in
december". So, 1995-39=1956). He discovered the 9 uses of Dragon
Blood (PS/SS). He's admired by lots of people. He defeated
Grindelwald, a very dark wizard, in 1945. But...
In my opinion, as I wrote before
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/message/59222):
--Me, Alex Cukier:
--"I have a feeling that beyond the evil x good, prejudice x
friendship, one of the most important motivations for Dumbledore is
that HE FEELS GUILTY about actual scenario in the Wizard World."
--Grey Wolf, that time replied:
--"Ummm... while it seems a nice theory, do you have any canon to
back it up? I myself have never seen Dumbledore as a guilty
consciense, just as someone that is fighting yet another war against
yet another evil wizard, and is getting tired of it all. But as I
say, it's a good theory, let's see what we can milk from it.
Well, Grey Wolf (and all other HP for Grownup mates), we HAVE THAT
CANON KNOW!!!
Of course we can have the explanation that Dumbledore gave to Harry:
there was a flaw in his plain of keeping secret about the 1st
Prophecy of Trelawney. Of course Dumbledore feels a little guilty by
not stop Tom Riddle when the last one was a student. But know I can
develop much more this "strange feeling I have that Dumbledore is
guilty somehow". Read it and tell me if I'm too nut:
THEORY
1) Dumbledore hear Trelawney prophecy in the first semester of 1980
at Hog's Head.
"THE ONE WITH THE POWER TO VANQUISH THE DARK LORD APPROACHES... BORN
TO THOSE WHO HAVE THRICE DEFIED HIM, BORN AS THE SEVENTH MONTH
DIES... AND THE DARK LORD WILL MARK HIM AS HIS EQUAL, BUT HE WILL
HAVE POWER THE DARK LORD KNOWS NOT... AND EITHER MUST DIE AT THE HAND
OF THE OTHER FOR NEITHER CAN LIVE WHILE THE OTHER SURVIVES... THE ONE
WITH THE POWER TO VANQUISH THE DARK LORD WILL BE BORN AS THE SEVENTH
MONTH DIES..."
2) Someone listen to the first part (from "The one..."
until "...seventh month dies..."
3) Dumbledore realizes that Voldemort is informed about that part and
decides to protect the two "pregnant couples" in The Order of the
Phoenix that match exactly with the prophecy. Lily Potter and Alice
Longbottom are already pregnant. Frank Longbottom and his wife are
Aurors, maybe they don't agree with that protection. They have a lot
of work to do during that terror years, or they don't believe in
Trelawney Seer powers, or whatever - they only agree to take his baby
(Neville) to Dumbledore's care (personally, or being Secret Keeper of
his location - probably Neville's grandmother).
4) Dumbledore start the same plane with the Potters. They agree:
maybe they were not Aurors, maybe they keep more important secrets of
the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore prefers not being the Secret
Keeper of both children - it's too risk. DUMBLEDORE BELIEVE THAT
NEVILLE IS "THE ONE" BECAUSE ALL OF THEM ARE PUREBLOODS (or just
instinct, or any other explanation). AND DUMBLEDORE BELIEVE THAT
VOLDEMORT WILL PROBABLY CHOOSE ATACK PERSONALLY THE BABY OF A HALF-
BLOOD, JUST LIKE HIMSELF. He suggests (or agree with) Sirius being
the Potters' Secret Keeper. All that results in Sirius-Pettigrew
change (not even known by Dumbledore) and we know what happened after.
5) AND DUMBLEDORE WERE RIGHT. Voldemort prefers attack personally the
Potters, using the information of his spy. He send some of his most
qualified Death Eaters (The Lestranges" to take Neville. They go
there, but Frank and Alice don't know where Neville is. They fight,
Bellatrix and Rodolphus torture the Longbottoms until they get crazy.
But Dumbledore has protected "The One" - Neville Longbottom.
6) With the information of what happened to The Longbottoms,
Dumbledore confirms that the Potters were V's personal attack. He
sends Hagrid to check the damage and get the baby Harry, BECAUSE HE
KNOWS HARRY IS STILL ALIVE. Why? Dumbledore know that Lily was good
in charms AND DUMBLEDORE TAUGHT HER AN ANCIENT MAGIC JUST IN CASE OF
VOLDEMORT ATTACK THEM (GoF, Chapter 33): "His mother (Lily) left upon
him the traces of other sacrifice...This is ancient magic, I should
have remmembered it..." - Voldemort. THIS ANCIENT MAGIC DUMBLEDORE
AND FEW PEOPLE KNEW SAVED HARRY. When Voldemort used Avada Kedavra on
Lily, the magic started to work. After that, when Voldemort used on
Harry, he "vaporized", AND HARRY SURVIVED WITH A SCAR, FORGED NOT BY
VOLDEMORT, BUT BY LILY/DUMBLEDORE'S ANCIENT MAGIC. Why? BECAUSE BY
MARKING HARRY, THE WRONG BABY WOULD BE THE MAIN TAG OF DEATH EATERS
AND VOLDEMORT HIMSELF, WHEN HE EVENTUALLY COME TO FULL POWER AGAIN!
As Dumbledore says later, in OoP Chapter 37:
"I KNEW NOT WHETHER IT WOULD BE TEN, TWENTY OR FIFTY YEARS BEFORE HE
RETURNED, BUT I WAS SURE HE WOULD DO SO, AND I WAS SURE, TOO, KNOWING
HIM AS I HAVE DONE, THAT HE WOULD NOT REST UNTIL HE KILLED YOU."
And Dumbledore knew he was putting Harry in danger in the future, but
if he could develop Neville Longbottom's powers before Voldemort
come back, everyone could be safe. The most important thing know
were PROTECT NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM AND KEEP EVERYBODY'S EYES ON "THE BOY
WHO LIVED".
7) Dumbledore's plan was working perfectly. As Dumbledore says later,
in OoP Chapter 37: "WHAT DID I CARE IF NUMBERS OF NAMELESS AND
FACELESS PEOPLE AND CREATURES WERE SLAUGHTERED IN THE VAGUE FUTURE,
IF IN THE HERE AND NOW YOU WERE ALIVE, AND WELL, AND HAPPY".
Of course Frank, Alice, James and Lily were not nameless or faceless -
but they were working for The order of the Phoenix, and they would
give their lifes to defeat Voldemort. The same logic Dumbledore
probably used that time: the most important thing is to protect
Neville and Harry, even with the sacrifice of their parents, in order
to defeat definitely Voldemort.
8) As described in OoP, Chapter 37, when Harry comes from Muggle
World to Hogwarts, it was important to help Harry, "the sacrifice's
lamb", and keep WW attention to him. "Vapormort" still believes he
is "The One". BUT HARRY STARTED TO SHOW AMAZING POWERS NA DEFEAT
VOLDEMORT YEAR AFTER YEAR. DUMBLEDORE STARTED TO REALIZE THAT MAYBE
HARRY COULDE BE "THE ONE", BUT HE COULDN'T ACCEPT HIS MISTAKE. Then,
he comes with this "error-not-telling-Harry-about-the-prophecy"
worries. HE WAS FOOLING HIMSELF. Neville, instead, shows himself
very limited magical gifts (Herbology), until OoP. Even know, he is
not as developed as lot of his mates.
9) CONCLUDING: DUMBLEDORE, INTHE END OF BOOK FIVE, SHOWS HE SHOULD BE
WRONG POINTING TO EVERYONE THAT HARRY IS "THE ONE", MARKING HIM WITH
THE SCAR, EVEN PERMITTING, WITH THE ACIENT MAGIC, THAT HARRY AND
VOLDEMORT CREATED SOME KIND OF LINK - TOO STRONG EVEN TO DUMBLEDORE
FULLY COMPREHEND.
10) DUMBLEDORE FEELS THAT MAYBE WAS HE THE PERSON WHO MAINLY HELPED
THE PROPHECY TO BE FILLED: HE CHOSE THE WRONG BABY, HE MARKED THE
WRIGHT ONE, HE CURSED THE LIFE OF HARRY GIVING HIM TO THE DURSLEYS TO
PROTECT HIS "SACRIFICE LAMB", WHILE HE TRIED TO DEVELOP NEVILLE'S
POWERS. DUMBLEDORE HAS CHOSEN THE EASY WAY (GIVE VOLDEMORT A RED
HERRING - "HARRY IS THE ONE"), NOT THE RIGHT ONE: PROTECT BOTH BABYES
THE SAME WAY.
