Now me:

I immediately thought of "Sir Properly Decapitated Podmore" from CoS
when I first came across Sturgis Podmore's name. I can't imagine JKR
using the same name if there wasn't a connection. I especially think
it's interesting that he's 38 years old - the same age as Snape and
MWPP (and JKR as of 7/31/03!). Since he was in the order during the
first Voldemort war, I suspect we'll hear more about him in books 6
and 7.

Speaking of same names - what about the Hogwarts headmaster portrait
Dumbledore refers to as "Fortescue"? Could he be related to the
Florean Fortescue who runs the ice cream parlor in Diagon Alley?
Although we don't know whether Fortescue is the headmaster's first or
last name - presumably it's his first name, since Dumbledore refers
to the other portraits in his office by their first names.
