That you're a damned fine teacher! 
Isn't that the POINT? 
Or are we to assume that for the rest of their lives
no Hogwarts 
student will be able to whip up a potion -- or perform
ANY magic if 
it comes down to that -- without a professor standing
over them?

Melpomene
 No. The point is if you were a "damned fine teacher"
your students would be able to shine in your presence
as well. It appears as if Snapes purpose is to prevent
both Harry and Nevile from gaining the full potential
of the potions course. However both listen and learn
and when not under his thumb are able to perform well.
