You came upon something that could very well be important in the 
coming books. As you point out, so much was made of those fake wands -
- and, since Fred and George just have to be in the last two books, I 
am sure the fake wands will come into play in some way like you point 
out, in the future. I had not thought of that before your post.

JKR seems to love to blur the lines -- the lines between real and 
fake (the wands, for instance), between dead and alive (refer to my 
published work, #65785, she points out Lockhartishly), human and non-
human (Hagrid, etc.), good and bad. Life seems to be nothing but that 
gray area posted on so beautifully by others.
