Percy as Boromir?

If Percy was working for DD as an "insider" then I doubt he'd have
sent Ron the letter he did. Whose benefit would it have been for?
Hermes bypassed the regular post, so it's not as if Percy expected
it to be intercepted. And what would have been gained by dissing DD
and Harry to Ron? An "insider" Percy would have been more likely to
distance himself from any sort of contact, much less intentionally
alienating his brother and Harry. No, I think pompous Percy is in
fact, a git. In the end I think he'll come around, but it may be too
late for him (or another Weasley).

The Boromir analogy is a good one. Tolkien uses the one ring as the
irresistible object that blinds and corrupts Denethor's son (and as
Gandalf wisely foresees, would have turned him against his father
had he gained it). JK uses desire for power in a more generic sense.
Voldy wanted to become the greatest (dark) wizard. Percy wants to
become the Minister of Magic. In contrast, Arthur Weasley is content
to staff the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts division (not even a
window!). DD passes on the MoM post, and would only be upset if he's
taken off the chocolate frog cards. Clearly, power corrupts, and
absolute power corrupts absolutely (see Fudge). These forces are
fighting for Harry, who at times imagines himself a central power
player ("look at what I've done") -vs- the reality of a larger world
in which he's part of a team effort. This seems clearly where JK is
heading. Either they will hang together or they will hang separately.
