In most book versions they are. Movies tend to ignore this fact so that the
general public is not shocked (see Excalibur for a counterexample).

Well, no. They both are children to Igraine, one from Gorlois (Duke of
Cornwall, father of Morgana) and one from Uther Pendragon (father of
Arthur).  Morgana and Arthur had a child in non-censored stories, Mordred,
who later kills his father.

Going back to on-topic, Arthur and Mordred die "one at the hands of the
other", which is a nice coincidence. They are the "Stag King" and the "Young
Stag". Refer to "The Mists of Avalon" if you want to read more about this,
the prologue by Marion Zimmer Bradley details her bibliography.
