I hadn't thought about his Xmas gift, however, in re-reading the 
book (I swear that /after/ this read I'm really going to read 
something else... like all five books in order!) I've begun to 
notice subtle hints at the future Harry/Hermione ship. Notice 
especially Hermy's reation to finding that Ron, not Harry, will be 
prefect. In the first couple of reads I considered her reaction to 
be merely embarrassment but now detect a clear note of 
disappointment.

And for those naysayers who don't think a Ron/Luna ship is likely, I 
suggest they reflect on Ron's personality traits and how Luna would 
fit into and fulfill his 'psycho-social' needs. And on the other 
hand, re discussion about Ron's grumpy nature in the past ("Why is 
everything I own rubbish!?"), now that Ron has finally proven to 
himself that he can do something (win at Quidditch), I think we'll 
begin to see a very different Ron emerge. The Ron hit by a spell and 
acting drunkenly during the O K Corale scene could be the last of 
the "old Ron" comic sidekick era. The new Ron may no longer care 
much about people's opinion and that may cement the possibility of 
the ship with "Looney Lovegood."

As to the N/G ship...? I don't know. Giny has been shown to defend 
the underdog or oppressed -- I'm amazed she hasn't been a member of 
SPEW. While I'll be surprised if the Trio aren't firmly shipped in 
one form or another by the end of the series, I'm not so sure JKR 
will ship up every secondary character. The N/G idea is nice 
speculation but I'm just not sure there's fuel for the fire there.

PS Oh, a question (to avoid another message -- I'm so lazy today!)...

In OoP we learn that Harry's dad wasn't a prefect. Why did I think 
otherwise before reading it? What about his mother? If not prefect, 
do we have canon for either of Harry's parents being Head Boy/Girl?

PPS And... if Ron become Head Boy his prophesy in PS will be 
complete.
