I have an interesting thought here.
I'm convinced both sets of parents knew of Trelawney's prediction for their sons. By default, so must Neville's gran and the Dursleys. Maybe the Longbottoms were so worried, that they wanted to be sure Neville could at least attempt to defend himself ? I mean, if you knew a child of yours was at risk of mortal peril, wouln't you want to help them somehow, whatever the cost ?
Maybe because the Dursleys have no knowledge or magical ability they thought they might be doing the right thing too. however much they loathe Harry.
