Just thought to stick my head up and say: Ana T, I'm with you, as a
brand-new Luna/Harry shipper. While appreciating MarEphraim's
Ron-reasons, I find I have problems with the whole concept.
Luna is STRANGE, she's wierd, she's not stunningly pretty or anything.
Ron would have enormous problems with that. His first girlfriend is
not going to be a Loony. He couldn't manage. I'll bet, if there was a
Ball again, it would take Ron much longer to realise that Luna is a
girl that it took for him in Hermione's case. He's got issues on being
insignificant. He needs a pretty girl to boost his ego. At least once.
At least at first. He could well outgrow this, but I really doubt he's
going to compromise.
Harry and prettiness is also a question though, he fell for Cho on
sight in GoF, and Cho has always been described as pretty. But I think
that the whole Cho-incident is gonna make him (probaly subconsciously)
rethink the matter.
Luna is odd etc, but in a way she is more normal than anybody around.
She says what she thinks, she just seems to feel thoroughly okay with
herself and the world in general. She can take a lot, she doesn't lose
her nerve. Harry has a horrible time sometimes because everyone feels
they have to "relate to him" in certain ways, either feel sorry for
him, or feel obliged to comfort him, or feel obliged to be grateful to
him, or think him a madperson, or Not Notice His Scar And Treat Him As
If He Were Just Another Person. Luna doesn't do any of these things.
Her saying "You're Harry Potter." at the beginning is just so bloody
normal, because no one else would do it (OK, this seems like a
contradiction in itself, but I can't quite express myself properly...
have been drinking lots of wine tonight, unfortunately). Others'd say
"You're Harry Potter!!!" (squeal, snigger, or awed silence) or Ignore
It, or whatever. What Luna says is completely superfluous: of course
Harry is Harry, he knows it, everybody knows it. So what? But it's
just what crossed Luna's mind, and she said it. No complication. This
style is exactly what helps Harry when Luna talks to him about Sirius,
and it is exactly what will always help him, in future books (I now
imagine myself as true a seer as Trelawney with Umbrigde breathing
down her neck...). He will this, before long, and he has already
started appreciating it. This relationship (friendly first, romantic
later) will grow slowly, and will therefore not be terminated by a
wrongly-placed comment or a stupid misunderstanding. I have great
hopes for them.
What Darrin said about Luna being the type guys regret not hving gone
out with, I heartily agree. It'll take time. By the time Harry's
seventeen, he'll bother more about finding someone special than
avoiding embarassing himself with someone strange. So be it!
And the chapter naming is of course tell-tale. Not a sure sign,
nothing is, but tell-tale.
Join, all ye Luna/Harry shippers! Let's make this ship the size of
Titanic: even if we sink, we'll sink in style and make it into
history! :-)
Love, Alice
