I have always felt that there had to be some kind of distinction. We know that the basic robes are the same, but I always assumed that under the robes was another type of uniform, i.e. not muggle clothes. After having seen the documentary/dvd special with JKR and the screenwriter for CoS, she *does* and *has* had a lot of input on thestory line and many of the *little* things in the films, so I would assume that if this is true, she meant for us to assume that each house has distinctions in uniforms from the books.

( also, even if this isn't true, Ron's Mum always sends Harry Gryffindor coloured jumpers ;) )
