Also, in several different interviews/appearances JKR has said that 
James played Quidditch as a CHASER.  He was never a seeker!

But, I had a thought-why don't the "new marauders" (Harry and co.) 
just ask Hagrid what houses the original mauraders were in?  He would 
know.
