it seems to me that the followers of Voldemort ultimately crave
power more than anyhing else, and are thus willing to "conveniently"
ignore that their Fearless Leader is a clear example of what they
supposedly detest.

I think you're spot on with this. Not only strange and senseless
values like 'racial purity', but massive hypocrisy in the trenches
when
it comes right down to it.

The way JK sets up the wizarding community is odd in this context.
It's almost a bipolar world. Half (Seamus' mom, Fudge, Percy) seem
to be persuaded/blinded by the most unbelievable tripe (Daily
Prophet, Rita Skeeter) and the other half have common sense
(Neville's gran, the OOP crew). There don't seem to be too many in
the middle, and the teeter-totter goes back and forth pretty easily
(Hogwarts students opinions of Harry, Molly's opinion of Hermione).
You'd think everyone would be up in arms about Voldy's return in the
final pages of OOP, but it seems more like most are reading about
how to deal with dementors over their morning coffee as if it's
happening somewhere else.
