For people who have followed any of the British School threads, you
know that it's common for people who are not going to go to
college/university or seek high level jobs to stop school at age 16
afterthe muggle equivalant of O.W.L.s (used to be O-Levels; keep
forgetting what it's called now). Recently someone said that muggle
student take qualifying test at the end of 5th, 6th, and 7th year;
each test giving them a higher level of qualification.
Fred & George are 'of age' and they have successfully completed their
OWL test, so it's would not be unusual for them to stop school and
pursue a career that didn't have specific 'school' requirements. So
techinically they are not drop-outs.
Given their family and the emphasis that Molly and Arthur place on
education, I would suspect that under normal circumstances Fred and
George would have stuck it out to the end. But now they have a chance
to open their business, become independant and make some real money.
It's clear that their products are popular; even Hermione compliments
them on how clever some of the joke items are, so the choices are
trudge throught mor school or get serious with their business. They
choose the business, althought the decision was help along by Umbridge.
I'll add another part to this thread about Fred and George's business.
I don't think they will treat Harry's money as a gift or even a loan
for that matter. They will not pay Harry back the G1,000. I think Fred
and George will be so greatful for Harry help that they will make him
a partner in their business; a minor silent partner, but partner none
the less. That means Harry has the potential for a lifetime income
from this investment, and will be able to live a very comfortable life
off his Weasley profits alone, and that income combined with the
income from whatever job he chooses will leave him very well off.
Just a thought.
