Ahem. My two cents worth.
I would be very surprised if, after a very long time, we learn Snape
really truly IS evil after a very long time of the book explaining
how Snape has turned to the 'good' side now. Knowing this, we can
only assume that it's only for the memories in the Pensieve that
Snape hates Potter.
So Snape hates Potter, Potter hates Snape. Both are at fault.
>From the beginning of the first Potions class, Harry has never tried
to even be nice to Snape--in many cases, he has given Snape plenty
of reasons to hate him. Granted, while Snape made the first "move,"
Harry didn't act like a wonderful little person and accept it but
not fight back... he just fought back.
D-Dore at one time says that it's an old man's mistake to realize
that old scars cannot heal. (Or something to that effect.) So,
Snape has to realize Harry is not James... but he consciously makes
himself believe that every Potter is the same misbehaving brat. I
don't think this will ever stop. If Harry tried to befriend Snape
now, or atleast politely address him and reconcile their
differences, it might work, but only because Snape should realize
Draco is the same bad DE-type as his father.
At the end of the seventh book, this issue will surely be resolved.
