Wait... are we still talking about the dementors here? I've only been
half-following this discussion, so I'm not sure that's what you're refering
to. But if it is the dementors, how can you say that Harry's driving them
off was more "convincing" than Snape trying to keep Harry on his broom? I
mean, I didn't really see it as Harry saving Snape so much as I saw it as
Harry saving Snape, Black, Ron, Hermione _and_ himself.
As for Snape's countercurse, it might well have had the effect of
restricting the bucking of the broom somewhat. True, it wasn't enough and
Harry would have fallen but we don't know it wasn't having any effect at
all. Anyway, I believe Snape is a powerful wizard, but I hardly think it's
fair to expect him to be able to out do Voldemort.
