I'm not a big fan of the "James as Lupin" theory. I am considering
Evil!Lupin--haven't decided yet. It's very hard to read these books
while trying to view each line in the light of so many different and
conflicting theories! But very fun--thanks to everyone who comes up
with a theory and posts it!

But knowing how important names are in the Potterverse....the
name "James" means "supplanter"...or "one who takes away another's
rights" or "one who takes another's place."

That alone is about enough to convince me.
