My theory? He *did* know their nicknames. After all, Harry did
shout to
> him in Umbridge's office something about Padfoot. He fully
expected Snape
> to know who Padfoot was, and Snape did know it was Sirius.
The only nickname we know for sure that he knew from age 16 on was
Prongs because he heard Sirius call James "Prongs."
It is probable that in his interaction with the Marauders, he would
have heard the other names, especially if he was sneaking around,
trying to get them in trouble. They don't seem to have been secretive
about the nicknames, that's for sure.
But at the PoA office scene, I don't think he knows the Parchment he
finds on Harry is a map. I think he knows Lupin, James, Sirius and
Pettigrew had something to do with it, but for all he knows, it
really is a Snape-insulter (which we now know would have been totally
in character for those guys to create.)
I think he thinks Harry knows what it is and got it from either his
dad's old things or from Lupin. Snape would think that Harry not only
knew it was a Snape-insulter, but would love playing with it. (And
truth, be told, if that's what it was, Harry and Ron would get a kick
out of it.)
In the end, though, he can't prove it was a map and Harry was using
it to get out of school. So, I don't think he knew it was a map. If
he did, I don't think Harry gets out of the office so easy, Lupin or
no Lupin.
