They are wizards after all! They are magical beings, just like elves,
fairies and centaurs. The wand makes it easier for them to
concentrate and comand the magic, by adding their own with the magic
of other highly magical creatures, such as unicorns, dragons and
Veelas plus the properties of the wood. If you want some more
examples of wandless magic, how about blowing up aunt Marge,
appearing on the roof of the school kitchens, and his cupboard
magically bursting open? Yes, they DO need wands, otherwise all sorts
of uncontrolable magic could happen, and I doubt they would be able
to perform complex magic such as transfiguration, curses and charms.
Also Mr Wesley says that "we are as far as.... as inventing self
spelling wands" (GoF) meaning, for me, that they indeed need them
combined with their memories of the charms.
For a professional view on wands and their properties, go to
www.mugglenet.com and visit Alivan's Wand Shop, where there is all
sorts of info and you can buy a proper wand too.
Elves are magical and are not allowed wands, because they would be
far too powerful otherwise.
