Nope, not an error. When they were coming out of the willow, and the 
moon turned Lupin to a werewolf, it was Sirius that got Lupin-wolf 
away from Harry, Hermione, Ron, SNAPE, Crookshanks and Pettigrew, and 
suffered pretty bad injuries in the process.

And since Snape was out cold (admittedly, through the work of the 
Trio) he couldn't have defended himself.

So, both James and Sirius have now saved Snape from a werewolf.

Hmmm, maybe there is something to Pip's ESE!Lupin.
