I hated Snape in the first book, came to grudging respect for him by
the end of it, and found myself actually feeling sorry for him in
POA. When we got the pensieve scene in OOTP, I was astonished to
find myself genuinely sorry for the character, in sympathy with him.

My current Snape-affections have absolutely NOTHING to do with Alan
Rickman, who is a nice-enough looking man, I suppose, but really not
my type. They have everything to do with his complexity as a
character, and his biting verbal wit. I do so love witty men.

As for Malfoy, whom I consider one of my very favourite characters...
I concieved a curiousity for him in book one- he was simply so awful
I couldn't wait to see how much MORE awful he might become. I revel
in his nastiness. But as the books went on, I've grown rather
attached to him. He's the personification of Harry's opposition.
Voldemort has, until recently, been an abstract, distant sort of
villain. Malfoy however, was PERSONAL enmity, up close, and forever
in Harry's face. What little glimpses we're given of him beyond his
Potter obsession (And I do believe that Draco is Potter obsessed.
His behaviour is beyond the pale.) make me want to see him grow and
change, make me want for there to be something salvageable in this
petty, cowardly little boy. And if there cannot be, then I'd like to
better understand just how it was that he got this way.

And none of that has anything to do with the fact that Tom Felton is
a pretty young man. I am old enough to be his MOTHER. My affections
are for the CHARACTERS, not the actors.

I hated Bellatrix with a passion. Actually? The people I came away
from OOTP with the most disgust for, were Fudge, Umbridge, and
Bellatrix Lestrange, in that order. Voldy himself is a distant
fourth. Fudge is beyond vile with his egomania and pompsity.
Umbridge makes my skin crawl; she's too realistic, and realistically
SCARY. Bellatrix was perfectly evil, and depicted in such a manner
that I expect to fully enjoy reading her death some day. I just hope
to Heaven it's Neville that brings it to her.
