Would James show up on the family tree even if he were related??  
IIRC, (Sorry, copy of OOTP lent out...) weren't the Weasly's removed 
because they were "Half-blood lovers" or something to that extent and 
the prestigious full-blood Black family would have none of this.  If 
James were related, he too would have been removed because he MARRIED 
a half blood.  Although, I do have to agree that Sirius would have 
mentioned something if they were in fact related by blood...
