I would love to think that JKR is referring to the long-suffering
Cubbies here, but I think the profile of the Cannons fits the Red Sox
more than the Cubs. The Red Sox, non-aficionados of baseball, are
famous for not having won a World Series since The Great War. The
Cubs have *never* won a World Series. The Cannons were once a great
team, with their glory days far in the past.

with deep condolences to Darrin from the sisterly perspective of an
Expos fan (star Vladimir Guerrero on the disabled list, team destined
for dissolution)

The club motto was changed in 1972 from "We shall conquer" to "Let's
all just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
