The Sergeant Majorette says:
Nothing so heavy -- JKR has said many times that Hermione is based on
her own too-smart-for-her-own-good self. Those of us who share the
same schizoid personality traits (*not* schizophrenic, okay? flame
off) are rarely considered likeable, but this very inability to
empathize with the emotional issues of others is the surest armor
against bullying and peer pressure. Hermione's friends don't *like*
her as in warm fuzzie big-hug *like*. They like her as in 'did you
just love it when she said that to [Draco, Umbridge, Snape]'; 'whoa,
she really knows this stuff'; and 'you're good to go if Hermione's
got your back'.
And that's fine with her. She is, after all, the avatar of a woman
who told an audience of hundreds of wide-eyed children that she did
not believe in magic.
