True - we don't know how the Longbottoms would have responded to the
arrival of Voldemort. We do know, though, that they were Aurors, we
know that Harry's parents were also clearly against Voldemort (we're
not sure about what they did, though), and we know that the WW is a
small one. It is quite possible that the Potters and the Longbottoms
worked together on some sort of charm to protect *both* babies. Maybe
any protective action by a mother (her love) is what set the spell off
that saved Harry, and the same thing could most definitely have
happened for Neville. The Longbottoms were described as popular in
GoF (right?), which leads me to believe that they were good people,
and good people would do absolutely anything they could to save their
child.

We found out in OoP that becoming an Auror is no small feat, which
leads me to believe Alice and Frank Longbottom were strong and
talented magically. I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that I
assume James and Lily were quite powerful as well, considering the son
they produced (as well as what we know about James's Hogwarts
activities and Lily being known for having a talent in Charms). The
magic of all four combined could certainly be enough to cast a spell
that would successfully save either baby.
