I know people have cited King Arthur/Harry Potter similarities before, so if I’m repeating something here I’m sorry.

While going over Morte D’Arthur I was struck by a number of parallels between the way Harry and young Arthur were raised - but in particular I was interested in the way a totally clueless young Arthur pulls the sword from the stone/anvil that Merlin had set in place as a test for the true king. And I began to wonder if Harry pulling the sword from the sorting hat that Dumbledore had sent to the Chamber of Secrets had more significance than Harry realized at the time. I don’t have CoS here with me, but I believe Dumbledore says something like “Only a true Gryffindor could have used that sword.” Could the Gryffindor sword be symbolic of Harry's destiny?

Name-wise, the enmity between Lucius Malfoy and Arthur Weasley also has some interesting parallels: in the Arthur legends, Lucius is the enemy of Arthur. Power-hungry Emperor Lucius in Rome demands tribute, and Arthur refuses. All efforts to make peace with Lucius come to nothing and Lucius brings an army to do battle. After a failed ambush on Lucius’ part, Arthur sees Lucius and cuts off his head, and all the Romans flee.

Other King Arthur names: Blaise (many different spellings, all the same person) is the person who teaches Merlin magic, and the scribe who writes about his adventures.
