must admit, though, that Sirius came to my mind as well. Even
though he represented a vital emotional sanctuary for Harry, and he
was certainly a powerful and important ally in the fight against the
Dark Lord, there was nothing inherent in him or his powers that
seemed to make him essential for carrying on the plot. There are
plenty of other experienced Wizards (especially now that we know
about the Order) to guide and protect our hero in the upcoming books.
My response: I disagree that Sirius was not an essential character to the plot of the books. Sirius was the only person in the world that Harry felt comfortable telling things too. He went to Sirius about everything, even about Ron and Hermione. Sirius was also the only people in Harry's life whose main concern was always Harry. Sirius took quite a lot of risks to protect Harry. His motivations for doing so could be argued (I know some people who say he only cared for Harry because of a promise to Lily and James, however, do believe that Sirius's love for Harry stretched well beyond obligation. Obligation to someone does not require that person to send expensive Christmas gifts and come to Quidditch matches just to see him play.
The one fatal flaw (if it can be called a flaw) is that Sirius cared far too much about Harry. Sirius was willing to take lots of risks to help Harry and to protect him. A lot of people say this is because he believed that he was infalliable or just enjoyed risks. But I beg to differ. Yes, he was a risk taker but he did not take risks without certain precautions. He always made sure to that Harry used various owls to send him things, and also made sure that code names were always used("snuffles"). However, seeing Harry suffer through this past year and not knowing how he could help him was killing Sirius. His death was just the final blow, his soul was continually being weathered down by all the stipulations of being a escaped con.
So he took a risk and new that he may very well pay the consequences for it but he didn't care. He had already lost a brother (James) and he was not going to loose a son too....
It bothers me that people think Sirius was a non-vital character when for all extensive purposes he was Harry's father.
But that does not mean that his death wasn't neccessary. I think that it was one of the only ways for Harry to grow.
I was very surprised at the death of Sirius. I did not see that coming. I really thought it would be Dumbledore. But JKR surprised us all. And what is funny is that many people claim they thought of Sirius now, but I remember Molly and Hagrid being the pick, and I only remember a couple of people saying that Sirius would be the one to go. Perhap, it was wishful thinking. Who knows?
