We don't know if there were only five beds, or if there more beds and
just five students in Harry's room. Maybe there are different numbers
of students depending on how many Wizard children were born in a
particular year - that seems possible to me. Also, in OoP Harry tells
one of the students that he can switch dorm rooms, so possibly there
are other boys in Gryffindor that are the same age. We just don't
know. 280 students MIGHT be close, but it's not definitive.
