Because Voldemort can get right inside Snape's head. Acting on the
surface isn't enough-- at some level, Snape really DOES have to hate
Harry, and he has to be able to project this hatred at a level that
will swamp out any disloyal feelings he has toward the Dark side.
Feelings like his love for Lily... lollypop, lollypop, oh, lolly lolly
lolly pop! ba da dum dum...
