If Neville's mother is competent enough to do those things, why 
doesn't she just discharge herself from the hospital?  Or at 
least tell someone she's okay and wants to get out?  Is it really 
plausible that she could do such magic, but couldn't whisper in 
gran's ear, "I've recovered; get me out of here"?

And why would V's henchmen have been keeping her confined for 
over a decade, during most of which time they had no expectation 
that he would return?  If they want to get rid of her, just kill her.

The candy wrappers are just what they appear to be: candy wrappers.
