While Draco shouldn't have been transfigured, and McGonagall put a
stop to it, I don't think the transfiguring is what hurt Draco. I
get the impression that transfiguring spells and switching spells
are pretty painless. I think what hurt Draco was flying up the the
air and coming back down, slamming the floor pretty hard,
repeatedly. That probably caused more damage than anything.
(Besides, while morally it was wrong, I sure got a big laugh out of
it!)
