  Now Karen

It is never stated that the work Flamel and Dumbledore did together
had anything to do with the Philosophers Stone. It could have been
  almost anything.

I had exactly the same 'discussion' with my boyfriend a couple of
days ago. My question to him was -

If DD is 150 and NF is 600 what could DD possibly have helped NF with?

He replied by reminding me that even the greatest scientists etc..
sometimes need a fresh pair of eyes to make their theory's complete
  (Einstein, as but one example).

I agree with Karen. I wish to add that Nicolas Flamel really did exist and was a noted scholar, teacher and alchemist. One of the houses he owned with his wife Pernelle still exists in Paris. The ground floor has been converted into a restaurant (quite good) and the cellars, which I had the privilege to visit, are extremely interesting.
