. . . I am confounded by his poor teaching and poor judgment. It's one thing to say he's got a soft spot for monsters and other unloved outcasts; it's another to suggest that he's so selfish and/or clueless that he willingly puts students at risk in his classes, and potentially puts the entire school at risk by bringing Gawrp into the picture . . .

Oh, I don't know. Hogwart's isn't a "safe" place by anyone's standards. Neville passes out in herbology (those mandrakes weren't mature enough to kill, but . . .), the first flying lessons must have been terrifying (Neville, again!), quidditch is "brutal," the forbidden forest is dangerous without Hagrid's additions (and Grawp turns out to save the day in OOP!). Even Snape's class is dangerous - potions splattering everywhere. Thank goodness the hospital wing is on hand. You know, I don't think Madame Pomfrey was ever inspected by Umbridge, either! Hagrid may have a marked predisposition to dangerous creatures, but that's what also uniquely qualifies him for that particular teaching post!
