I mentioned in a post a couple of days ago (inspired by comments of
Kristini) that the Arch of the series may be broken into trilogies.
In that regard, I'd like to make the case a bit more clearly and
read the opinion of others.
Kristini argued that the first three books formed a kind of trilogy
establishing the scene and major characters of the series. In this
regard, basic elements of the overal plot of the Arch would be
establish, who's who, what's what, where's where, etc.. GoF and OoP
are then form a bridge to the final two books of the series.
Now until all seven books are written it's ultimately all
speculative, but what if we consider the Arch as dividing into three
interlocking trilogies?
PS, CoS, and PoA would constitute the first trilogy. Possible themes
regarding Harry's summertime living arrangements could include the
movement from disfunctional family (PS) to functional integrated
family (CoS) to independent life (PoA). I'd be interested to know if
other unified themes could be pulled out of just these three books.
Now the second trilogy would be PoA, GoF, and OoP. Consider: PoA
introduces Sirius Black. A fearful character whom, we discover, has
a parental-like role to play in Harry's life. GoF expands this role
as SB gives advice, weighs possible evidence in the mystery, etc..
And in OoP, SB become the house-bound parental figure who commands
respect (Harry is furiously loyal to him) but whose judgement shows
signs of slipping, and ulitmately has a mortal role to play.
This would allow the third trilogy to be Oop and BookVI and BookVII.
Evidence for OoP serving as a first part of a thematic trilogy --
the introduction of new characters, clearer perception of the
reality, frailty and fallibility of the world and its leaders, etc..
What do all of you think?
