I must disagree. In GF (US 682) Dumbledore says "The imposter
needed, of course, to keep the real Moody CLOSE BY, so he could
continue making the potion." Later, (US 689) Crouch says "I kept him
alive, under the imperious curse. I wanted to be able to question
him. To find out about his past, learn his habits, so that I could
fool even Dumbledore." The wording in these two passages leads me to
believe that the polyjuice potion would work even if the person were
no longer alive. Crouch himself says the only reason he kept Moody
  alive was to question him.

      Now me
Developing further on this train of thought, Hermione tried to use a
strand of hair found on Millicent Bullsrode in COS(granted it was cat's
hair). But my point is, that it was not a live strand of hair that she
recently plucked. Then it was quite a while later that she attempted to use
it in the polyjuice potion. I think that Hermione would have known to use
liv samples of the person she was tranforming into. Also what about the
toenails Ron mentioned, I can't imagine using recently clipped toenails.
