I really go for the whole 'tortured hero' thing...

Cindy, I fear it may still end up as more of a "tortured villain"
thing. Many classical villains have, themselves, tormented, even
victimized in their own way (think Milton's Satan, for starters).

A bit off of your topics, but I feel one of the reasons that Hermione
trusts Snape is because of Krookshanks. We can be pretty sure
Krookshanks is a kneazel and I have assumed that Krookshanks has
given Hermione information on Snape. Although Hermione hasn't said
anything about it to Ron and Harry, we know she can keep a secret
about things she thinks they don't need to know (think timeturner).
