I've said it before and I'll say it again: Our Hermione, dearly though I
love her, is a steely, ruthless character. When she sees a need for action,
she takes it without worrying about what the consequences will be.
When she led Umbridge into the forest, she was accepting a real possiblity
of death for herself (and Harry!) for the chance to get revenge on Umbridge,
and rid the school of her. If the centaurs hadn't shown up, she could have
found herself having a friendly little chat with Aragog and his brood. _And
she didn't even have her wand!_ I know quite a few grown adults who don't
have "what it takes" to the extent that she does. When she grows up, she'll
be incredibly formidable, and even in her fifth year of school, she's well
able to see what needs doing, and do it, no matter what it is.
