Well, we're not going to convert one another, and I respect that,
but just one last (I hope I'm going to have the self control to
stick to that) defense and I'll stop.
Read back over classes in Herbology. "the venomous tantacula is
teething" Snape's potion class, in fact all of CoS ( they could have
closed the school). The first flying lesson, the Quidditch games,
the dueling club, the list goes on and on...Hogwarts is a dangerous
place, one that we may have trouble relating to in our safety
concious and litigation happy world.
If taken in this context, rather than our own, Hagrid seems more the
amusing character I think he is intended to be
Using Malfoy's injury by the hippogriff is not, for me at least, a
very good example for your point. Hagrid had already warned the
sudents of the dangers. Malfoy suffered the consequences of his own
actions. It was his arrogance that caused the accident, and on
rereading the passage it seems impossible to me that he was not
trying to goad just such an incident.
The magical world itself is fraught with dangers. It is Hogwarts'
job to prepare the students for this.
Otherwise, well we can let Umbridge come back with a nice, Ministry
approved syllabus for all of us.
