For me, I can state that this isn't "retroactive", nor a "redefinition" of 
any sort - I've felt all along that Sirius was as stuck in the past as Snape, 
just with an opposite PoV.  Certainly since the time he invited Harry to live 
with him - the first time he's seen the kid since he was at most a year old.  
That "interaction" between them - which is actually VERY limited - hasn't 
occurred yet at that point.  I thought then that he was casting Harry in the role of 
James's "replacement".

Was his death deserved?  No - even I won't say that.  Was it warranted?  Yes 
- by the storyline.
