I agree. I don't mean to criticize Rowling, I love her work but... I
can't help but feel that her world has gotten a bit larger and more
complex than one person can deal with. When you start having hundreds
of different spells, creatures, and magical devices, it is not possible
to keep track of all the possible combinations in all situations.
As I said before, JK writes great books, but there are sometimes when a
simple solution is at hand that she does not use.
Invisibility cloaks are useless when aurors (and maybe others) are around
(Mad Eye Moody saw through it in GoF, so does Dumbledore in Hagrid's hut in
CoS). As not all aurors are in the Order of the Phoenix (yet), Sirius could
be quickly caught.
As for using the simple solutions, I find a lot of people take the difficult
way round when dealing with problems, unexpected or not (and you must admit
it makes the books so much nicer!).
