LOL! I love your explanation for poor Snape's greasy hair (presumably 
he was spending loads of time in the lab at school as well). I think 
he was described that way, though, to make him unattractive to 
readers. This is a pity - good-looking enemies are forgiven much by 
fans (though Snape has his fans too, it seems, but probably more
among adults than child readers). Anybody remember the British science 
fiction series BLAKE'S 7? 
There was a character who talked like Snape, Kerr Avon. But Avon was 
good-looking, so he was the most popular character in the show, 
especially among female viewers. Are we really that shallow?
