Hello, this is my first post and I am sorry it is so long but I am
so excited because I have been lurking for what seems like forever.
Ana T (post 65100) says
<snip> JKR made him [Percy]too evil. It's too easy. Doesn't anybody
remember Percy in GoF rushing into the freezing water after the
second Triward Tournament event to make sure Ron was okay?! It went
something like "his face looking somehow younger." He got his shoes
and fancy robes soaking wet! When it came right down to it, he is a
Weasley. He can't be raised by the Weasleys and go so far astray.
No!
ME
Also, Percy's reaction to Ginny disappearing into the Chamber of
Secrets appears less cold. In COS when Ginny is about to tell Harry
what she knows about the Chamber of Secrets, Percy walks into the
room. This scares Ginny. Why? Percy dismisses Ginny secret because
he thinks it is about his own secret (kissing Penelope). But when
Ginny is actually taken into the chamber he sends an owl to his
parents and disappears to his room, away from the rest of the
family. Is this guilt? Is this the moment he realizes that
everything is not about him and there is a serious threat to his
family and the world? Is this when he decides to join Dumbledore?
Is Percy 16? (of age) He has one more year left at Hogwarts, I think
that would make him 16.
Ana T (post 65100) says
<snip>No one at MOM trusts Arthur Weasley or his family but they
would give Percy access to loads of stuff. Poor, misunderstood,
heroic Percy!
ME
Percy access began after he "severs ties" with his family.
Ana T (post 65100) says
This started as a response to another post but I'm looking for
supporters now because I think I'm right.
ME
I think you are right.
Ana T (post 65125) says
<snip>being estranged from his family and maybe (from the outside)
looking as if his climb up MOM is blocked, he maybe recruited by LV
to be a Death Eater -- exactly the way Dumbledore planned and what
brave, dear, Percy volunteered to do. All to save his family and
Harry. I'm thinking Arthur was let in on the secret so that Percy
would not have to bear the burden of such a secret by himself.
ME
Arthur started the argument with Percy and according to Fred OOP CHP
4 PG 70 "I've never seen Dad row with anyone like that" I am sure
Dumbledore knows but does Mr. Weasley.?
Ana T (post 65470) says
Oh yeah, I forgot about "brave" Griffindors. I am trying to gather
clues toward my theory that Percy is working for the Order
undercover. What could be braver than pretending to hate such a
loveable family like the Weasleys and returning his mother's hand
knit sweater just to help protect Harry and fight Voldemort?! How
terrifically courageous!
ME
What about slamming the door in Mrs. Weasley's face. OOP CHP 4 PG
72 "She came up to London to try and talk to Percy but he slammed
the door in her face" Chills. That was brave.
Doriane (69029) says
I read a magazine about coding secret messages the other day. And
yesterday, while I was re-reading Percy's letter to Ron, it struck
me hard : this letter feels fake. It feels to me like Percy is
desperately trying to say something to Ron. <snip>
ME
Prior to Percy's letter we have two events that COULD support
Percy's letter is a coded message. (Typical JKR) OOP/US CHP 13 PG
278 Hermione says "Don't you remember, Moody told us to be careful
what we put in writing! We just can't guarantee owls aren't being
intercepted anymore" and in the same chapter as Percy's letter to
Ron, Harry constructs a similar letter to Sirus. OOP/US CHP 14 PGS
280-281 - "Harry reread his letter several times, trying to see it
from the point of view of an outsider. He could not see how they
would know what he was talking about - or who he was talking to
just from reading this letter. He did hope Sirius would pick up the
hint about Hagrid"
Speaking of Percy's letter (OOP/US CHP 13 PGS 296-298),
Percy mentions Ron's name 5 times within the letter. We already
know the letter is for Ron so why does he needlessly keep using the
name? Does he use Ron's name to draw attention to the sentence?
1. "
congratulations, Ron, I want to give you some advice,
which is why I am sending this at night rather than by the usual
morning post."
2. "I must tell you, Ron, that nothing could put you in danger
of losing your badge more than continued fraternization with that
boy."
3. "Seriously, Ron, you do not want to be tarred with the same
brush as Potter, it could be damaging to your future prospects, and
I am talking here about life after school too."
4. "Your loyalty, Ron, should not be to him, but to the school
"
5. "I do hope, Ron, that you will not allow family ties to
blind you to the misguided nature of our parents' beliefs and
actions either."
And , does anyone else think it is possible that this message was
intercepted and altered by Fudge/Umbridge to include another
agenda? That could explain a lot of the contradictions in the
letter, the bribe and why the coded message isn't very clear.
1. "I have always been afraid that you would take what we might
call the `Fred and George' route, rather than following in my
footsteps "
2. "people who count have a very different and probably more
accurate view of Potter's behavior"
3. "I urge you to speak to Dolores Umbridge, a really
delightful woman, who I know will only be too happy to advise you."
4. I shall say only this a student who shows himself willing
to help Professor Umbridge now may be very well placed for Head
Boyship in a couple of years!
Debbie (post 69395) says
I don't think it's a coded warning to Ron. In fact, I don't think
the letter was his idea at all. My theory is that Umbridge advised
him to write it, told Percy what points he should make, and edited
it herself. Who else could possibly think her *delightful*? Look
what else the letter advises: Don't hang out with Harry. Tell mum
and dad to stay away from those petty criminals that hang out with
Dumbledore. Get to know Umbridge. Be "willing to help" Umbridge
since the poor woman gets no cooperation from staff. There's even a
hint of a bribe -- do this and you, too, could be Head Boy!
ME
Debbie, could you believe that the letter wasn't Percy's idea but
Dumbledore's and that the originally coded message was edited by
Umbridge?
Percy 2nd to last paragrapgh states,
"I am sorry that I was unable to see more of you over the summer.
It pains me to criticize our parents, but I am afraid I can no
longer live under their roof while they remain mixed up with the
dangerous crowd around Dumbledore
""
I count myself very lucky to
have escaped the stigma of association with such people
""
I do
hope, Ron, that you will not allow family ties to blind you to the
misguided nature of our parents' beliefs and actions either. I
sincerely hope that, in time, they will realize how mistaken they
were and I shall of course, be ready to accept a full apology when
that day comes."
ME
Could he mean
. I am very sorry I have to criticize our parents in
public. I am afraid I can no longer live under there roof because
the Ministry knows they are involved with Dumbledore. I have been
lucky that they do not suspect I am involved. I hope that you will
understand this letter and not be blinded by what people are saying
about him. He hopes in the future he will be able to tell everyone
it is not true and the family will be together again. "Please
think over what I have said most carefully"
Doriane (post 69029) says
He refers to the next day's Daily Prophet at least twice. Sounds to
me like: make sure you read the DP tomorrow, there's something of
vital importance in there!!
ME
Percy does mention the Daily Prophet twice in his letter and he
makes two valuable statements in the article. OOP/US CHP 15 PG
307 "He [Fudge] is now responding to concerns voiced by anxious
parents, who feel the school is moving in a direction they do not
approve.'" Can we think of whom these families might be, the
Malfoy, Crabb and Goyle families? OOP/US CHP 15 PG 307 "[Umbridge
is] providing the Minister with on-the-ground feedback about what is
really happening at Hogwarts" Just how much and what information is
she sharing with the Minister. Notice Minister and not Ministry.
Ffred (post 69147) says
I don't think his role in the story is over - I think he's going to
have to redeem himself, and may well end up dying in the process.
ME
I will have to sadly agree that Percy may die and I think Mrs.
Weasley foresaw the circumstances OOP/US CHP 9 PG 177 "Half the f-f-
familys in the Order, it'll b-b-be a miracle if we all come out of
this. . . . and P-P-Percy's not talking to us. . . . What if
something d-d-dreadful happens and we have never m-m-made up?" Sad
seeing is how it will be the family member she doesn't even know is
in the Order.
Rebecca Stephens (post 69833) says
Does anyone know why Percy and Penelope were keeping their
relationship secret? I can see Percy wanting to keep it from his
brothers, but I cannot fathom any reason Penelope would agree to
keep her boyfriend a secret.
ME
Could Percy just be protecting her?
Just one thought from within the collective
