chosen to infer that JKR meant total school population, so I like to
knock off about 125-150 for faculty, administration and all other
hired help from the count. That leaves me with about 850 students,
or four houses of 212 students. This would mean an average of 30
students per year in each house.

In California there are high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area that will have anywhere from 400-2000 students depending on whether it is a charter school, private or public school. Two of my kids go to a high school with 1950 students. Two of my nieces go to a high school that also has the same number of students. So for JKR to say that there are about 1000 students at Hogwarts sounds like a good number to me. That means there are roughly 35 students per house per year, which is a normal class size at the high school level here.
