Part of Lupin's problems in Book 5--at least the shabby robes,
slightly unhealthy look--might also be tied to his problems finding
employment. Remember Sirius's comment that Umbridge had drafted
legislation that made it nearly impossible for Lupin to find work?
If he can't find work, he's probably not getting paid, and so new
clothing probably isn't high on his list of ways to spend his money,
and if he's really destitute, he's probably not spending much money
on food (although he does eat well with the order, at least when
Molly and co are around). Add that to the stress of being in the
Order and knowing that an evil wizard who's killed your friends (and
many others) is loose again but no one will believe you (and the MOM
would call you liar if you went public), and a person could age
rapidly.
Just a few thoughts--I do like your analysis of Lupin and the
Lupin/James theory, btw.
