You see, I keep thinking "That awful boy" is not James, the way she refers
to him (whoever HE is) is not consistent with the way she refers to James in
previous books. She talks about him as "that Potter" or he's mentioned as
Lillys's "good for nothing husband" but never, ever mentioned as a "boy" and
it's true that all the adjectives she or Vernon use are pejorative but not
that plainly negative. James is not awful, not even IMHO to the Dursleys
standars, I think she's talking about someone else. Someone who she
considers weird and awful or someone who frightens them at a certain point
telling them (Lilly and Petunia) scary stories about dark prisons run by
dark dementors or something of the sort. Hope we'll know in future books.
But there's certainly something odd about "that awful boy". My first thought
was Snape, he does seem the type, but I don't know, maybe it was Sirius and
one of his practical jokes.
